Building Africa Mathare Branch

About the School

Millennium Academy School is one of the institutions found in Mathare slums. Currently the project caters for more than 257 children, of which 85 % are orphans and are so much frustrated of life. Education as the key to the future of mankind is greatly needed for the children of Mathare Valley who do not have an appropriate access to that very basic necessity.

The school basically caters for the orphans and the vulnerable children through provision of pre-primary and primary education. Most of these children are aged between 4 and 17 years. The school currently works with boys and girls who are highly frustrated in life due to poverty, lack of guidance and counselling among other natural calamities.

At inception, the project had a population of 75 pupils and 4 teachers, working under voluntary basis. The project basically caters for the orphaned children who happened to have lost their parents through HIV/AID’s and other natural factors.

One of the major works is to restore the lost hope of these frustrated children in order to make them feel that they are also valued in the society irrespective of the situation they are facing in life.

Due to poverty, most of these children in Mathare slums indulge into some activities e.g. drug trafficking, crimes, robbery, and prostitution among others. Some of the children are being forced into early marriages (i.e. at the age of 10), forced labour, girls being violated (defiled/raped) among other issues.

The BUA as an organization also trains these children through guidance and counselling to make them well equipped and make them understand the implications and the consequences related to the above mentioned activities.
