GROWING OF TREES AND REHABILITATION OF GULLIES
BUA established the Wang’chieng branch under which the successful execution of this project was realized. It is located in Kajiei Sub-location Wang’chieng location East Karachuonyo division, Rachuonyo North district, Homa-Bay County.
INTRODUCTION
The BUA group was formed in 2009 and registered in 2011 with members numbering to 45 members comprising of 17 men 24 women and 4 youth. The group undertook to find solutions to problems facing Wang’chieng location which is majorly Gully erosion. This is as a result of:
-
Poor vegetation cover
-
Excessive run off from hill tops
-
Siltation of the river due to soil erosion
-
Floods and landslides along the river due to poor farming system along the banks.
The effects of gully erosion are enormous from:
-
Poor and inaccessible road network
-
Destruction of landscape
-
Land slide
-
Loss of biodiversity
-
Water pollution and siltation of water bodies and drainage
All these lead to low poor living standards among the Wang’chieng community thus the need for this project was justified. To reverse the situation and improve the livelihoods of the community the following intervention was put in place.
-
Planting trees
-
Construction of check dams
-
Protection of river banks
-
Establishment of soil conservation measures
